The Importance of Interoperability and Standardization of Health Data
Digital Healthcare Projects and the implementation of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) have brought unique challenges in the effort to share information. How data is captured can vary depending on the institution that uses it. Data is understood when its definition is consistent and accurately accepted by its users. Standardization of how data is captured is critical to allow the production and export of data needed to support quality assessment, decision support, exchange of data for patients with multiple health care providers, and public health surveillance. Patient safety and quality improvement are dependent upon embedded clinical guidelines that promote standardized, evidence-based practices. Unless we can achieve standardization with terminology, technologies, apps, and devices, the goal of drastically improving patient outcomes won’t be realized. Medicine today is very complex. Capturing data in a standardized nomenclature, format, and language has proven to be difficult. Patient information can be reported in different ways by different practitioners treating different conditions for the same patient.
Standardization is not an easy task!
However, MY Synergy has never aimed at performing easy tasks. Sharing of standardized data is our goal. Progress toward general standardization has been made. MY Care PSP uses standardized data sets. These sets ease the management of patient records and eventually improve patients’ medical outcomes. MY Care PSP allows for the sharing and reutilizing of components from Microsoft’s Healthcare Data Model. MY Care PSP also allows specifying the ailment, drug manufacturer, medicine characteristics, and medication plan to create clear A-to-Z procedures for patient treatment and support. Input data in a master repository applicable across the platform. In addition, all components and data sets are designed based on the HL7 FHIR standards framework to ensure data interoperability across multiple systems and vendors.
